Chelsea Manning Tried to Commit Suicide
Chelsea Manning, who is serving a 35-year military imposed prison term for leaking classified information to the Wikileaks consortium will be brought up on further charges related to a suicide attempt as well as threatening and rule-resisting behavior while in custody.
Manning allegedly tried to commit suicide on July 5, 2016. She is being charged with having, “prohibited property, “resisting the force cell move team,” and exhibiting, “conduct which threatens.”
Manning risks being place into solitary confinement indefinitely or being transferred to a maximum security prison to finish out the rest of her 35-year sentence. She also risks having a decade added to her sentence or having any chances at parole diminish greatly.
An appeal to re-try her sentence was filed by Manning recently, She is protesting her sentence and self-described unfair treatment as a prisoner.
Manning underwent gender transition surgery while in prison and is fighting to secure more regular after-transition medical follow-up.
She also wants to be assigned to custody matching her gender and to be referred to by the pronoun, “she,” as opposed to, “he.”
Manning also works as a freelance journalist and LGBT advocate for the Guardian.
Chelsea Manning was born as a man, Bradley Manning, before undergoing gender transition surgery.
